Doctor Who – Christmas Special – Press Release

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

Production has started on the 2011 Doctor Who Christmas Special in which the Doctor (Matt Smith) finds himself in war-torn England embarking on a magical and mysterious adventure with a young widow and her two children.

A stellar guest cast including Claire Skinner (Outnumbered), Bill Bailey (Black Books), Arabella Weir (The Fast Show) and Alexander Armstrong (Armstrong & Miller), join Matt Smith in the emotional festive special, packed full of Christmas thrills and chills.

Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer, commented: “The Doctor at Christmas – nothing is more fun to write. Maybe because it’s so his kind of day – everything’s bright and shiny, everybody’s having a laugh, and nobody minds if you wear a really stupid hat. Of all the Doctors, Matt Smith’s is the one that was born for this time of year – so it’s the best news possible that he’s heading back down the chimney.”

The special, set during the Second World War, sees Madge Arwell and her two children, Lily and Cyril, evacuated to a draughty old house in Dorset, where the caretaker is a mysterious young man in a bow tie, and a big blue parcel is waiting for them under the tree. They are about to enter a magical new world and learn that a Time Lord never forgets his debts.

Claire Skinner said: “I am thrilled to be in Doctor Who playing Madge who is a bit of super-mum. It’s a magical part.”

This marks Matt Smith’s second outing as the Doctor at Christmas time and will follow hot on the heels of the successful 2011 series, currently airing on BBC One until October.

The Christmas Special was commissioned by Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama and Danny Cohen, Controller BBC One. Steven Moffat is Lead Writer and Executive Producer with Piers Wenger and Caroline Skinner, also executive producing.

Filming on the Christmas special will continue until mid-October 2011. Click here to Watch Doctor Who Episodes Free

Doctor Who – Christmas Special – More Details Revealed

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

More details about the forthcoming Doctor Who special, A Christmas Carol, have been revealed by the shows executive producer Piers Wenger. The title of the episode was revealed last week – although only reported by some outlets this week. The episode is named after the Charles Dickens story of the same name but executive producer Piers Wenger has revealed that the special will not feature a character called Scrooge.

“There’s no one called Scrooge in it and it’s not set on Earth, but there are familiar archetypes from that story within it that will please fans of Dickens’s original.” – Piers Wenger

The Christmas special will guest-star Katherine Jenkins and Michael Gambon. So far all the previous Christmas Specials have been set entirely on Earth or at the very least partially set on Earth. The 2007 special, Voyage of the Damned, was mostly set onboard a replica Titanic above the Earth but did feature scenes set on Earth itself – the special guest-starred the Australian singer Kylie Minogue.

This year’s Children in Need telethon, on Friday, will once again feature a special preview for A Christmas Carol as well as other Doctor Who related features.

Doctor Who – Creators & Cast at Comic-Con

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

BBC America announced that it is bringing the cast and creators of Doctor Who, Torchwood and Being Human to Comic-Con International in San Diego next month.

Doctor Who star David Tennant will appear alongside writer/executive producer Russell T. Davies at this year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego, BBC America announced. They will take part in a Doctor Who panel, along with executive producer Julie Gardner and director Euros Lyn, July 26 at 10 a.m. PT.

Tennant will travel to San Diego having shot his final scenes as the 10th Time Lord. He and fellow panelists will discuss the latest incarnation of television’s longest-running science fiction series and take questions from the floor. There will also be exclusive sneak peeks from the upcoming specials, which will debut on BBC America.

The stars and makers of Torchwood will also make an appearance 48 hours after the last episode of Children of Earth airs on BBC America with a panel featuring star John Barrowman, writer/executive producer Davies, executive producer Julie Gardner and director Lyn, July 26 at 2:15 p.m.

Being Human’s creator and writer, Toby Whithouse, plus lead actors Russell Tovey, Lenora Crichlow and Aidan Turner will appear at the same panel to talk about the inspiration for the show and what it’s like to play three twentysomethings with secret double lives: as a werewolf, a vampire and a ghost. All four panelists will be signing exclusively at the BBC America booth on July 25 at 3 p.m.

Comic-Con takes place July 23-26
