Doctor Who – Creators & Cast at Comic-Con

BBC America announced that it is bringing the cast and creators of Doctor Who, Torchwood and Being Human to Comic-Con International in San Diego next month.

Doctor Who star David Tennant will appear alongside writer/executive producer Russell T. Davies at this year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego, BBC America announced. They will take part in a Doctor Who panel, along with executive producer Julie Gardner and director Euros Lyn, July 26 at 10 a.m. PT.

Tennant will travel to San Diego having shot his final scenes as the 10th Time Lord. He and fellow panelists will discuss the latest incarnation of television’s longest-running science fiction series and take questions from the floor. There will also be exclusive sneak peeks from the upcoming specials, which will debut on BBC America.

The stars and makers of Torchwood will also make an appearance 48 hours after the last episode of Children of Earth airs on BBC America with a panel featuring star John Barrowman, writer/executive producer Davies, executive producer Julie Gardner and director Lyn, July 26 at 2:15 p.m.

Being Human’s creator and writer, Toby Whithouse, plus lead actors Russell Tovey, Lenora Crichlow and Aidan Turner will appear at the same panel to talk about the inspiration for the show and what it’s like to play three twentysomethings with secret double lives: as a werewolf, a vampire and a ghost. All four panelists will be signing exclusively at the BBC America booth on July 25 at 3 p.m.

Doctor Who Assistant Is Unveiled

Little-known actress Karen Gillan has been unveiled as the next assistant in Doctor Who. The 21-year-old will star alongside new Time Lord Matt Smith in the new series, to be broadcast next year.

Gillan has already appeared in the drama, having played a Soothsayer in The Fires Of Pompeii in the last run.

“I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor’s new companion. – I just can’t wait to get started,” she said. “The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can’t quite believe I am going to be a part of it. Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him,” she added.

Head of Drama, BBC Wales, Piers Wenger said she brings “energy and excitement” to the role.

“When she auditioned alongside Matt we knew we had something special,” he said.

Writer and executive producer Steven Moffat said they saw some “amazing actresses” but Gillan “walked through the door the game was up”. He described her as “funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it”.

“A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too,” he added.

Gillan, from Inverness, developed a love for acting after attending several youth theatre groups and taking part in various school productions. At the age of 16, she decided to pursue her career further and left school to study acting at Edinburgh’s Telford College. She went on to secure a place at the Italia Conti drama school in London and landed her first role in the Scottish drama Rebus. Parts in Channel 4’s Stacked, The Kevin Bishop Show and James Nesbitt’s forthcoming film Outcast followed, but the role in Doctor Who is her first high profile to date.

David Tennant and Michelle Ryan visit The Planet Of The Dead

When a London bus takes a detour to an alien world, the Doctor must join forces with the extraordinary Lady Christina, in this one-off seasonal special. But the mysterious planet holds terrifying secrets, hidden in the sand. And time is running out, as the deadly Swarm gets closer.

Planet Of The Dead features David Tennant as the Doctor, Michelle Ryan as Lady Christina and Lee Evans as Malcolm. It is written by Russell T Davies and Gareth Roberts.

Planet of the Dead is also being simulcast on the BBC HD channel – the BBC’s High Definition channel available through Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media.

Who Will Play the Doctor: The Eleventh Doctor is… Matt Smith?

Just who will play the Eleventh Doctor?

Ending months of rumors and insane amounts of anticipation (from yours truly, who did lose sleep over this last night), BBC has finally announced which actor will assume the mantle of the Doctor, replacing outbound series lead David Tennant in Doctor Who.

And the answer is… Matt Smith?

The out-of-left-field casting announcement has left many wondering just who has replaced David Tennant. 26-year-old Matt Smith is best known for his work in BBC Two’s Party Animals, ITV’s Secret Diary of a Call Girl, and in the BBC One telepics Ruby in the Smoke and Shadow in the North, where he starred opposite former Doctor Who star Billie Piper.

The announcement was made live today on BBC One during a special edition of Doctor Who Confidential, during which the identity of the Eleventh Doctor was finally revealed. Shooting on the fifth season of Doctor Who, to air in 2010, is slated to begin this summer.

“I’m just so excited about the journey that is in front of me,” said Smith. “It’s a wonderful privilege and challenge that I hope I will thrive on. I feel proud and honoured to have been given this opportunity to join a team of people that has worked so tirelessly to make the show so thrilling. David Tennant has made the role his own, brilliantly, with grace, talent and persistent dedication. I hope to learn from the standards set by him. The challenge for me is to do justice to the show’s illustrious past, my predecessors, and most importantly, to those who watch it. I really cannot wait.”

“The Doctor is a very special part, and it takes a very special actor to play him,” said inbound head writer/executive producer Steven Moffat. “You need to be old and young at the same time, a boffin and an action hero, a cheeky schoolboy and the wise old man of the universe. As soon as Matt walked through the door, and blew us away with a bold and brand new take on the Time Lord, we knew we had our man. 2010 is a long time away but rest assured the 11th Doctor is coming – and the universe has never been so safe.”

Shortly after news broke that 37-year-old David Tennant would no longer pilot the TARDIS after 2009, I made my own list of which actors (and one actress) I’d like to see take over as the Eleventh Doctor.

For a while, I suspected that Blackpool’s David Morrissey would take over as the Doctor. After all, he and Tennant starred in last month’s Doctor Who Christmas Special entitled “The Next Doctor” and Morrissey’s character was also man known as The Doctor, but after viewing the steampunk-driven special last week, I knew it was… an impossibility. (As for why Morrissey’s character couldn’t be the Doctor, you’ll have to wait until Sci Fi airs the special later this year.)

I have to say that I’m extremely surprised by the choice of Smith, who is a mere 26 years old, but also think that it’s perhaps a blessing to cast a relative unknown in the iconic role of the Doctor. Smith can take over from Tennant without the preconceived notions that would have come along with top contenders Chiwetel Ejiofor and others.

But, rest assured, David Tennant isn’t going anywhere just yet. Tennant will star in four feature-length Doctor Who specials during 2009, after which both he and current head writer/executive producer Russell T. Davies will depart the series.

Season Five of Doctor Who, starring Matt Smith, is slated to air in 2010 under the watchful eyes of new executive producers Steven Moffat and Piers Wenger.
