Are you a fan of The Amazing Race?

The producers of “The Amazing Race” definitely can’t sue Zac & Laurence for being stupid, but they can certainly resent the Father/Son Adventurers for possibly screwing up the intended structure of the show’s latest leg.

Oh well. It wasn’t a big deal. I don’t think that Laurence & Zac’s dumbness had any impact at all on the results of the leg, but they definitely contributed to an anti-climactic conclusion to what was otherwise a decent episode of television.

Click through for the breakdown…

Coming off of last week’s third Non-Elimination Leg of the season, Sunday’s (November 6) episode was structured so that the Double U-Turn at the end of the leg would force two teams to do a Detour in which one of the options had the potential to be crushingly difficult for most of the available teams. Instead, the Double U-Turn was reduced to being a non-factor, a real waste of a game-changing element.

No matter how you slice it, I’m pretty sure that Justin & Jennifer were doomed, which is a small pity. I grew not to mind the formerly bickering siblings and this wasn’t the way you want any team to go out on “The Amazing Race.”

The episode began with a travel equalizer as the teams were required to take a two-hour bus ride to a town on the banks of Lake Malawi. Generally, you know that I hate equalizers, but I don’t get annoyed by equalizers when the teams are all within 40 minutes to start the leg. [On one hand, it's amazing that Marcus & Amani were that close to first given the trouble they had on the last leg. On the other hand, it didn't seem like they were nearly as close to Bill & Cathi as the editing of last week's episode made it seem.]

Last week I mentioned that several teams have built up wildly disproportionate Roadblock advantages in favor of the physically stronger member of each partnership. That meant that this episode’s Roadblock mostly attracted the physical B-team, including Sandy and Cathi (who still lag way behind Jeremy and Bill in Roadblocks Performed), plus Jennifer and Cindy. It required only that players serve as bike taxi drivers for locals delivering fish. Complications came in three forms: Sandy and Laurence got lost, Andy’s bike broke from over-exertion and Jennifer forgot to take the clue with her. It seems like an innocent mistake that Jennifer made, but that ended up being the pivot point for this entire episode, spinning the siblings from nearly first place last week (they squandered their win by failing to pay their driver) to elimination. Because Jennifer left the clue with Justin, she dropped off her fish and then didn’t know what to do. For an unrevealed period of time, she stood and basically waited with her hands on her hips hoping that another team would come by and she’d find out what to do next. Now you might say, “Surely if you go *out* somewhere, your default solution in lieu of anything else would be to go *back* to that somewhere,” right? That’s one logic-based thought. A second would be, “I could stand here waiting in frustration, or I could go back to Justin and get the clue and find out what comes next, so that at least I’m not waiting helplessly,” right? Eventually Jennifer cam to the second conclusion. But she didn’t come to the second conclusion quickly. Jennifer said that she lost track of time, but I look forward to asking Justin tomorrow in our exit interview if he has a better sense of how long his partner was gone for.

That was it for the leg. Justin & Jennifer fell so far behind on the Roadblock that they couldn’t catch up. But they couldn’t have caught up anyway, not really.

The Detour was a tough one. The choice was between Dugout and Lugout. In Dugout, teams had to take a dugout canoe, paddle out to a specific point and paddle back. In Lugout, teams had to help unload a cargo boat, including carrying eight passengers back to shore.

In a season of no-brainer Detour tasks, this was the biggest no-brainer of all. Dugout wasn’t an easy task, but it was possible for any team to complete. The same could not be said for Lugout.

And I’ll say it again: Dugout was pretty tough and was probably a very good barometer for how well teams can work together. Ernie and Cindy reached Dugout seconds ahead of the Snowboarders and immediately recognized that they were literally going around in circles, while Andy & Tommy were racing off towards the prize in their normal perfect tandem. This prompted Ernie & Cindy to use the Express Pass they’ve been holding onto since the premiere. I don’t think it was necessarily the perfect time to use it and the decision looked even worse when even after punting on the task, they couldn’t find the location to get the Pit Stop clue and their lead over the Snowboarders vanished. This lead to a very exciting foot-race to Phil Keoghan at the mat, with the Snowboarders passing Cindy within sight of the host, even as Ernie was carrying both of their packs. This was the fifth leg win for the Snowboarders and their second win without an asterisk attached. You might say, “Surely it would have been nice for the Snowboarders to give Ernie & Cindy the win,” but the prize for the leg was $7500 apiece, which is more than I’d want to hand to Ernie & Cindy out of pure Christian charity. We only occasional get actual sprints to the mat to determine legs, so that was fun and the producers milked it, what with the lack of other tension.

Going back to the Detour, though: Did nobody go to summer camp? Lemme tell you: I can’t drive a stick-shift (I’d learn before going on “The Amazing Race”) and I wouldn’t be eager to do certain things involving heights, but I *know* how to stern a canoe, darnit. The Snowboarders either knew how to stern a canoe, or they were just in tandem enough to compensate. Bill and Cathi were also in tandem and I get the feeling Bill’s probably done a little canoe tripping in his time. But I loved that Jeremy’s coaching to Sandy amounted to “You put the thing in the thing and you turn it like that.” Excellent. They struggled. Zac & Laurence also struggled for a bit.

But speaking of Zac & Laurence… So the Snowboarders and Ernie & Cindy and the impressively competent Bill & Cathi all finished. Zac & Laurence finished Dugout just as Marcus & Amani were finishing Lugout, the only team to make that choice. Nobody had used the U-Turn. Zac & Laurence got lost and Marcus & Amani finished, didn’t U-Turn and headed to the Pit Stop, passing Zac & Laurence along the way. At this point, Zac & Laurence get to the U-Turn and they decided to U-Turn… Marcus & Amani. The team THEY JUST PASSED. We don’t know where they actually crossed paths. The editing made it look like it was feet away from the U-Turn point in order to amplify the stupidity. But at that point, Zac & Laurence knew that Sandy & Jeremy were still doing the Detour and they *should* have known that Justin & Jennifer hadn’t arrived at the Detour at all. Why on Earth would they have U-Turned Marcus & Amani?

I blamed Zac & Laurence for taking the excitement out of the leg with the wasted U-Turn, but am I right that if they’d U-Turned Jeremy & Sandy, Jeremy & Sandy wouldn’t have been able to immediately U-Turn Justin & Jennifer before they finished the second part of the Detour? So Zac & Laurence had the ability to attempt to eliminate Jeremy & Sandy instead of Justin & Jennifer if they saw fit, but that was it? I’m just saying once they decided they were going to use the U-Turn at all, they might as well have used it on a team they knew it would impact, rather than throwing the U-Turn away.

I have no idea if my musing here makes any sense. I just don’t know if any team other than Marcus & Amani could have completed that Lugout Detour. The hard part was carrying the people on your shoulders, which essentially had to be done by the male member in mixed-gender teams. As he reminded us at least five times in this episode, Marcus used to be in the NFL. He’s a huge guy. And carrying eight people back to shore was HARD for him. Do you think Jeremy could have done it? Do you think Ernie could have done it? Do you think Justin could have done it? I’m skeptical. This is the sort of task which, if the U-Turn had been used on them, would have guaranteed the elimination of already-departed teams like the Cute Twins and the Showgirls and may have been the straw that broke Bill & Cathi’s backs. So the leg was designed to force two teams into doing Lugout and it probably would have been an advantage for Marcus & Amani, had they required it.

But I’m just rambling now, aren’t I? It’s been a long weekend of work. Sorry…

And next week? BUNNY DRESSAGE!

Other thoughts on this week’s episode:

*** The Speed Bump for Marcus & Amani was a sliding tile puzzle. Those suckers can be hard if you’re not good at them and it looked like Marcus & Amani were slowed down a little. They recovered because of Marcus’ speed with the Roadblock and thanks to Jennifer’s blunder. As Speed Bumps go, it wasn’t the easiest or the hardest we’ve seen. It penalized them for a little, though.

*** Justin & Jennifer were dead meat from the opening moments of the episode when Justin, apropos of nothing, talked about how important it was for him to come out to Jennifer and how it brought them closer together. If that piece of totally gratuitous, but effectively humanizing biographical information didn’t tip you off to near elimination at the very least, you’ve never watched this show before. Justin was very understanding of Jennifer’s mistake and Jennifer clearly felt awful. Oh well.

*** Cindy had several Ugly American moments in this episode, complaining about the locals accents, complaining about how “primitive” Malawi was and even complaining about the smell on a bus that didn’t look that crowded at all.

*** Marcus played in the NFL. Dunno if you knew that. [Marcus & Amani had a really good leg and I got a definite rush of happiness as Marcus returned to the beach with the last person on his shoulders and he encouraged Amani to get the people to cheer for his arrival. That was fun.]

*** Phil Keoghan has started to be impressed with Bill & Cathi. So far we haven’t heard yet about how no “old” team has ever won The Race, but we may be hearing about that as soon as next week, as the producers search for storylines.

*** Terrific hair on that Pit Stop greeter.

Anyway, what’d you think of this leg? Are you gonna miss Justin & Jennifer?

Last week, despite all the hustling and bustling about the busy streets of Bangkok, the challenges that involved riding elephants and disassembling and reassembling Thai spirit houses, the order in which the teams finished all came down to choosing the right cab driver and being able to keep cash in one’s pocket. Ex-NFL star Marcus and his wife Amani was able to beat the traffic and surge into first place, while twin sisters Liz and Marie, flat broke and forced to beg for transportation, hit the mat in last place and were finally (mercifully) eliminated. Seven teams remain.

Watch All Seasons Of The Amazing Race

Starting Line – the M.R. Kukrit Heritage House in Bangkok, where the teams checked in at the end of Leg Five. The first clue told them to make their way 5,000 miles across the Indian Ocean to the town of Lilongwe in the country of Malawi, Africa, and from there to find Gate 7 of the Limbe Tobacco company, where their next clue awaited. All teams ended up on the same plane, with connecting flights through both Singapore and Johannesburg.

This is TAR’s first trip to Malawi, a tiny, landlocked, democratic country in the southeastern portion of Africa, nestled snugly in between Mozambique and Zambia. Home to roughly 14 million people, it is also among the world’s least developed countries, with a low life expectancy and a high infant mortality rate. One of its chief industries is tobacco, which probably explains why the show chose tobacco as the basis for its first challenge.

Clue Box #1 was a Roadblock. It entailed one team member putting on a workman’s uniform and transporting ten 200-pound bales of tobacco leaves through a warehouse to a designated drop-off zone, using only a hand-cart that could carry only one bag at a time. Plus, the warehouse was built like a maze, full of workmen pushing carts around who were not too particular about whether you got to where you were going quickly or not. It’s probably just as well that all the all-girl teams were already eliminated, because those bales were incredibly heavy, and every single coed team, unsurprisingly, had the male member perform this task. Once the ten bales were delivered, they received their next clue, which told them to find the Memorial Tower and search for the next Clue Box.

Clue #2 was also a Detour. The choices: All Sewn Up or Not Grown Up. In the former, teams would go to a local tailor shop, choose a customer, and then use manual sewing machines to finish the customer’s suit in order to receive their next clue. In the latter, teams headed to Lilongwe LEA School where they had to use provided materials (cardboard boxes, nails, string, bottle caps) to build toy trucks for the kids. Once the truck was satisfactorily kid-tested, teams received their next clue.

Most of the teams chose the school option, and I don’t have to tell you how freakin’ adorable African schoolchildren are. Conversely, the tailor shop was hard to find, set as it was in a crowded marketplace with a huge clutch of locals ever-present. Add to that the fact that the sewing machines looked like they were from the 19th century… Not surprisingly, the three teams that chose the sewing machine option were the ones that came in last this leg.

After completing the Detour, all teams were to perform one more task: to find the R-K Furniture Shop in the town of Ntchisi, and transport two hand-crafted wooden beds to Leg Six’s Pit Stop, Kumbali Village. Thankfully, the teams didn’t have to carry the heavy beds the whole way, as local transportation was allowed to be used. The beds themselves turned out to be useful as well, as all of the teams were to be used for an overnight stay in the village.

Below is the order the contestants finished in, along with some of their more interesting moments.

#1. Andy and Tommy – No team in recent memory has had a bigger combination of smart racing and lucky breaks than the snowboarders. After starting off in the middle of the pack, they surged through the Roadblock and the Detour, passed Jeremy and Sandy by taking a flatbed truck that might have been meant for them, and were then awarded first place because of a mistake by Justin and Jennifer. This is their fourth win in the last five legs, and their prize is another awesome trip, to a private island in the British Virgin Islands. Damn, what a sweet reward.

#2. Justin and Jennifer – Being African-American and a special ed teacher, this was a particularly meaningful leg for Jennifer, who seems to have truly mellowed since a really belligerent start. They actually were the first team to hit the mat, but they were told by Phil that they neglected to pay the truck driver that helped them transport their beds, and so they had to go back and settle up before they could be checked in. It only cost them one spot, but that still has to suck.

#3. Jeremy and Sandy – Most Roadblocks usually have some locals that are filmed, sitting off to the side, laughing hysterically as the silly Americans try to do something they do every day and fail miserably, but Jeremy made his way through the tobacco warehouse with a big ol’ grin on his face, while scads of men in workmen’s garb hollered. I’m not sure if the hollering was encouragement, ridicule or some choreographed dance number, but it was fun to watch (you just know it was their first time on American TV). Jeremy was actually the first one to finish that task.

#4. Laurence and Zac – I thought that young Zac would be the one to do the tobacco challenge, but it was Laurence instead who did it, and he seemed to be the one most physically unable to do it. I mean, I know he’s an athlete, but yachting is less about being fast than it is about being strong, and Laurence is not a lightweight, if you know what I mean. He brightened during the school challenge, stating that he wished he could have spent more time with the kids.

#5. Ernie and Cindy – Not much to report about this group, as they were in the middle of the pack from start to finish. No major blow-ups, no meltdowns, nothing really memorable, save perhaps one image of the couple hanging for dear life onto a speeding truck that they used to transport their bed to the village. While most of the trucks that were used were large enough to accommodate both beds and racers, Ernie and Cindy’s wasn’t, and Cindy commented that she had never felt “less safe” in her whole life. They made it to the mat without incident, though.

#6. Bill and Cathi – I certainly never thought this team would make it past six legs, and my admiration for their stamina keeps on growing, a stamina that was demonstrated by Bill in the tobacco warehouse, on a task that would have surely sent me to the emergency room. As farmers, they made note of how scenic and spacious Africa was, and made a point of mentioning it as soon as they landed. Plus, they’re just so polite and positive to everyone (and not in that annoying way), it’s impossible not to like them. I still wonder if they have it in them to go all the way to the end, though.

#7. Amani and Marcus – They were very stoked to go to Africa, a place they’d never been before. One of the best moments of the season came as Marcus, the last one to finish up the tobacco challenge, was followed out of the building by the multitude of workers, shouting encouragements and well-wishes at him and Amani. Damn, you gotta love Africa for the energy alone. Sadly, the leg didn’t turn out well for them. They, along with Bill and Cathi, were the last teams out of the airport, and they got stuck behind a slow procession of cars celebrating someone’s engagement (Mazel tov!), so it was clear that last place would come down to one of them. Unfortunate karma for the two teams that finished 1-2 in the last leg.

On top of that, they chose the sewing challenge and were well in last place when their cab broke down and they had to get another one, a situation that ruffled even Marcus’s usually ebullient feathers. Amani was tearful when they checked in, but Phil spared them from elimination because this was yet ANOTHER non-elimination leg. That makes three in only six legs (although one of the others sent two teams home). With only six episodes left, I have to believe that there will not be any more second chances. I hope Amani and Marcus come through it.

Next week: More Malawi. Bikes, boats, automobiles. Jeremy and Sandy start to melt down, and Amani and Marcus struggle to overcome a crippling Speed Bump.

The fourteenth season of “The Amazing Race” continued its race to Thailand with 6 remaining teams. From Jaipur, India, the teams took flight to Phuket and the first to depart were Tammy and Victor. Behind them in respective orders were Mel and Mike; Kisha and Jen; Margie and Luke; Jamie and Cara; and Mark and Michael.

Buying the tickets from a travel agency, all the 6 teams were booked for the same flight. As soon as it landed, they have to find the gorilla statue that they had been given a photo of earlier. In a taxi race, all of them headed out to Phuket Zoo except for Mel and Mike who were directed to Putong Beach. Jamie and Cara were the first to find the Gorilla and the Road Block clue told them to take a picture with a tiger in the zoo.

A gut challenge, the picture taking with the tiger increased the anxiety when the trainer was revealed as a one-armed man. The road block also required the contestants to lie down while an elephant walks pass them and squats on them. From there, they were told to go to Tong Herbs Store where there were 99 drawers containing the next clue. The store owner could only open one drawer that was pointed by the team one at a time.

Meanwhile, Mel and Mike were still clueless on the Gorilla’s whereabouts and still wound up on the beach before realizing that they supposed to go to the zoo. Mark and Michael were the first to get the clue from the herb store.

The Detour was next, giving a physical challenge in the middle of the heat. In “100 Barrels”, teams must load 43 barrels of drinking water to a boat and lift the rest from the bottom of the ship to the deck. In “Two Miles”, teams must travel with a hand-pulled rickshaw with one sitting on and the other pulling for 2 miles.

Mark and Michael as well as Tammy and Victor chose to do the rickshaw while the rest did the “100 Barrels”. Once completing the detour, the teams should travel to Wat Thep Nimit Temple which was the sixth pit stop in the race. Mark and Michael checked in first but they had to incur a 2 times 30 minutes penalty for asking their cab to lead them to the detour and for messing up with the rickshaw.

Mel and Mike were then shown performing the 100 Barrels task while the race to the pit stop was going on. Tammy and Victor finished the rickshaw challenge but they left it at the park gate and had to reclaim it. Victor and Tammy finally stepped on the carpet to be the first and won a trip to Oahu.

With one minute left in the penalty, Mark and Michael had to swallow a bitter pill when Jamie and Cara overtook to be the second team. Margie and Luke were team number four and as soon as they checked in, Margie passed out. It was down to Kisha and Jen versus Mel and Mike. The former team got lost on their way to the pit stop while the latter were still struggling with the barrels. Mel and Mike arrived last and got eliminated.

Download full Episodes of “The Amazing Race”
