If years from now, future generations wanted to understand American culture from 1997 through the present time, they merely need to view the Comedy Central series South Park. Though not a genre unto itself, scholars and essayists have written academic pieces elaborating on this notion; but don’t worry, I’m not taking you down the highbrow path. Mine is just a reflection, not an in-depth analysis. And I am just asking you to watch South Park Season 16 Episode 4 online here.

Things were so good for us, South Park needed only to scratch the surface when holding up the cultural mirror, focusing on how Americans put forth and then manage themes that made us unique and wonderfully ridiculous: vast corporate expansions, alien abductions, mean kids, overprotective parents, assisted suicide, gay rights, religion, crushes, conservation, and sex education/ repression/ harassment.  We’d watch South Park on our new perfectly color-coordinated Crate & Barrel sofas, chuckle and think: it’s true; there is a Starbucks on nearly every corner! The show has been accused of being many things. They have made fun of scientologists, Tom Cruise, David Blaine, Paris Hilton, Persians, PETA and just about every other celebrity, high profile celebrity. But the thing is, South does not mind if you’re a powerful persona. This does not mean that South Park is insulting you in the way you understand it. This just serves a reflection to all of us who are watching the show. South Park differs from its contemporaries that by having characters inside the show get the point of the show, it can have a moral or social message, whereas the others are limited by their form to what I would call social commentary. A social message tells us what to do or be, whereas a social commentary just tells us what not to do or be. Cartman gets his ass inspected.

It’s rather hard to tell what South Park will be like when the show returns in just two days on Wednesday, October 5th. After the show’s 15th season cliffhanger, Stan and his family have moved away from South Park, Colorado​ now that everything in life is totally plain and boring… or have they?

Only Wednesday will tell if the show actually plans to act on the decisions of the midseason finale or if, as always, the show will simply reset itself as it’s done at the start of every episode for the past 15 years. the back end of Season 15 will go, but it does feature Cartman, and that’s always fun, right?
