In the November 18 episode of Supernatural, Sam and Dean meet up with Bobby once again and the trio heads to a state park in New Jersey to hunt a creature that has been attacking people in the woods.  The people in town seem to think it might be the real Jersey Devil.  Dean also gets to feed his food addiction when he learns that a Biggerson’s restaurant is in town.  He’s thrilled about it, but is very upset when he learns that the special sandwich might be making people crazy.  The episode is written by Ben Edlund and directed by Guy Bee.

“The Mentalists” was such an episode, and threw Sam and Dean on a murder investigation in a town full of psychics, both of the honest and charlatan varieties. Such a situation is the mother lode for Supernatural‘s wit and goofiness, and new Supernatural writers Ben Acker and Ben Blacker (creators of LA’s horror stage show “Thrilling Adventure Hour”) took to the task like they’ve been on staff forever. “The Mentalists” was a solid debut for the duo.

Things started with Dean on his own after last episode’s breakup with Sam. But the Winchesters are gluttons for solving murders, and inevitably their paths would cross again. The Bens got this out of the way very early on, with a random encounter between the brothers in a new-age diner. It was little convenient, and Sam, after scolding Dean last week and storming off, rolled over fairly easily and agreed to rejoin The Hardy Boys. It took some sting out of their split, but this is Supernatural, and you knew the boys couldn’t stay apart for too long.

They found each other in town because they were both tracking suspicious murders in the town of Lily Dale, the most psychic town in the United States. It was such a fun premise that I wondered why the show hadn’t used it already. But it came with a twist: The psychics who were being murdered actually had legit premonitions of their deaths before they expired.

After seeing security footage of a female ghost threatening a local psychic, the brothers identified the woman as one of the two sisters who founded the town, and she was rumored to actually have the skills she advertised. Her sister, however, did not. Sam and Dean did what they do best, which is to say they dug up graves and exhumed bodies, set the bones of the psychic sister on fire, and voila! Case closed!

Except the psychic who had the vision of death still died, because Sam and Dean couldn’t be bothered to stick around town for a few more hours to see if the premonition happened as envisioned. Pretty sloppy hunting, guys! It turned out the sister whose bones they burned was trying to warn victims that they were about to be killed, and it was the other, phoney sister who was actually the murder-y ghost. Ooops! Then things got Scooby-Doo-y and we learned that the owner of a local curiosities store was in cahoots with the legit sister to take out the fakes in town, because the shop owner actually had powers but couldn’t get a job because people were scared of real psychic stuff. And he would have gotten away with it if it weren’t for those meddling Winchesters!

The most amusing part of the episode was watching Sam and Dean, who have first-hand experience in all things paranormal, dismissing all the psychics as hacks and cons. But something legitimagely ghostly was happening in the town of Lily Dale, and putting this very real supernatural murder mystery against a town full of people faking it made everyone a suspect. Who actually had the skills to summon a bloodthirsty ghost and who was just doing their best impression of The Mentalist‘s Patrick Jane, Psych‘s Shawn Spencer, or Miss Cleo? Lots of the townspeople pegged Sam and Dean for who they were, whether they were using real hoodoo or simply reading Sam and Dean’s body language like Crossing Over‘s John Edward. Heck, one even pulled a spooky statement from the departed Ellen out of the air, imploring Dean to talk it out with Sam. By doing this, the show acknowledged that while most of the psychics were fake, there may actually be something to the people wearing headscarves, hoop earrings, and too much eye makeup. It was a great way to connect Supernatural‘s universe to the real world.

I’d like to touch on what I mentioned before and get some feedback. This season, I’ve found myself anticipating the standalone episodes more than the serialized ones. The only reason I can think of for this is that the longer story just isn’t working they way it should be. By contrast, the standalone episodes don’t need to account for anything except for Supernatural‘s unique tone, which combines humor, gore, and mystery. I’ve been feeling this way since last season, but I think I’m only willing to admit it now. Anyone else feeling that way?

– More slash fiction with a good crack on the brothers’ potential “alternative” lifestyle.

– This was a fantastic Dean episode. He was on fire for the whole hour, whether he was telling the waiter that an “affirmation” would lead to a punch in the face or cracking wise about winning the Powerball while snooping around a rigged fortune teller’s table. For his part, Sam was a bit of a rain cloud, but that’s understandable considering how pissed he is at Dean.

– Could Dean’s cute psychic friend be his new Lisa? They seemed to hit it off.

– There were some cool deaths this week, particularly in the cold open. A Ouija board piece in the throat? Loved it. Death by being slammed down on forks? Sure, why not?

Episode 7.06: The Mentalists – Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) investigate the gruesome murders of resident mediums in Lily Dale, the most “psychic” town in America. They discover that an angry spirit is killing off the psychics one by one, but in a town full of people who claim to be summoning spirits, they have a little trouble identifying the medium controlling the ghost. Mike Rohl directed the episode written by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker.

“Hello, Cruel World” was written by the lovely Ben Edlund, and it gave us some trademark Edlund nutsiness after a Leviathan-filled Cas took a dip in the water supply. I know I’m repeating myself, but it’s always great when little girls end up possessed by evil monsters, and I’ll never tire of Supernatural using them (even though I now have to find a new route home to avoid the elementary school I pass). Either way, the important thing is that the Leviathans are spreading their wings or gills or whatever they have and taking over humans so they can army up and work on taking over the planet.

For better or for worse, this is essentially the same situation the Winchesters faced in Season 5. Same black eyes, same body-swapping, but the black fog has become a black goo. It’s great in the sense that it harkens back to the Supernatural of old, when some of Vancouver’s finest thespians did guest spots as demons of the week, but is it too repetitive of what we’ve seen before? So far, I don’t think so.

Supernatural is at its best when it uses disposable meatbags as surrogates for monsters, there’s a certain delightful fear in knowing that anyone can become a monster (thanks, totally exploitable storytelling device!). The Leviathans differ from demons in the sense that they seem particularly new and especially disrespectful of humans; the fact that they synch with their human hosts and know what they do gives them a distinct advantage as they jump from body to body. It’s like scrapping the Dungeons & Dragons character you just created because you rolled an eight for Constitution and it’s awfully hard to clear out the Kobold mines with only fifteen hit points. Oh boy, I just nerd-alerted myself.

Point is, I’m okay with Leviathans being substituted for demons even though I don’t actually know what their powers are. They’re funnier than demons, they’re more clueless than demons, and they’re shiftier than demons. Plus, they’re more terrifying because they EAT OUR INTERNAL ORGANS, and I love their plan to turn the Sioux Falls Hospital into a buffet. There’s a have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too thing going on this season in that it’s simultaneously lighter and darker than last season: lighter in that there are some funny situations going on, and darker in the sense that there are some very effed-up things going on. Everything just seem more twisted, and I always like Supernatural more when it’s wound up a bit.

As for the other major story, Sam’s splitting headache is very reminiscent of what we put up with last season (yes, I said “put up with” because it sure dragged on). But this time around, at least so far, it’s playing out on the screen a lot better. Last season, Sam was too comfortable in embracing change. This season, the fear is in his eyes because he knows he can’t tell the difference between reality and Satan’s mind games; this gives us a hint that the Sam we all know and love is still with us. Last season, I didn’t get that impression, Sam was mostly a dick. He wasn’t Sam Winchester—he was some guy we didn’t care to spend our Friday evenings with.

Finally, let’s talk about Castiel, who ended Friday’s episode in a mess of black goo. But is he gone forever? He wasn’t in good shape before the, uh, meltdown, leaking black snot all over the place—so at least the vessel has to be destroyed, right? I know some of you are holding out hope that he’s not really dead, but showrunner Sera Gamble has confirmed that he’s a goner. It’s an unusual way to send off one of the series’ favorite characters, and even though Gamble says it’s possible that Misha Collins might return, Castiel’s… whatever-that-was doesn’t really help things out that much.

Supernatural‘s seventh season is off to a good start even though it’s borrowing a lot from last season. To avoid the same problems that have plagued it in the past, the show is going to have give us a “Big Bad” to root against—or to root for, as Supernatural baddies tend to be disarmingly charming. When did we meet Eve last season? Episode 12 or so? That was way too long to wait. And more importantly for longtime fans, the show must maintain the tone of the first two episodes. I want to feel three things when I watch Supernatural: I want to be as scared as a television show can make me, I want to feel my mind boggle over some seriously twisted stuff, and I want to nearly spit out my whiskey when Dean does something funny. Let’s keep this up, Supernatural!

Castiel (Misha Collins) continues to struggle with the burdens that come with his new-fangled power. The broken wall in Sam’s (Jared Padalecki) head causes him to have hallucinations, and he has difficulty discerning what’s real and what’s not. Bobby (Jim Beaver) worries that Dean is beginning to stumble under the weight of fighting Castiel and keeping an eye on Sam. Dean and Sam both begin to crack as Sam suffers memories of his time in Hell while Dean begins to falter under the combined weight of coping with his brother and Castiel. Meanwhile, Castiel has problems of his own as he tries to cope with his new Godhood. That is a summary from Supernatural s07e02.

And this week episode talks about the crack between Sam and Dean as Sam suffers from some of his memories when he was in the hell, and he eventually lost his soul there. It may be almost makes Dean go crazy seeing his brother in that situation, but what is more heavier to carry for him is coping up between Castiel and his brother. And Castiel was also on the process of adjusting himself for his new comrade. Together, they should fight into the end to save this world and keep the evil away from the surface of the Earth and let the good win once again.

Here we go once again Supernatural maniacs, we are at this point because of the newest season of Supernatural.
