American Idol : Twelve finalists and/or future singers (six men and six women) who were selected from America, compete in a talent contest in which they were asked to sing any song they like on this “Star Search” clone. After each song that was sung, the judges, Abdul, Jackson and Cowell, then critique that finalist’s chosen song. After each show’s ending, America must vote for a finalist to whom they really think their performance is good using this AT&T (now Cingular Wireless) or any other cellular phone to cast votes with. Once the votes are locked in, the judges and America decides who has the most and the least amount of votes, and the contestant with the least amount of votes is eliminated, and it goes on each week’s show until the winner is crowned as “American Idol,” where he/she wins a recording contract worth up to $1,000,000. The rest of the other finalists to whom they have been voted off before (the runner-up) also get recording contracts, too.

A list of potential judges in the upcoming installment of “American Idol” has grown longer with P. Diddy being rumored as a contender. New York Post’s Page Six claims to have learned that producers of the FOX reality series have reached out to the New York-born MC about the possibility of him taking one of the judge seats.

The 42-year-old artist joins the likes of Adam Lambert, Brad Paisley and Nick Jonas who were also mentioned to be in the run for the judging gig. Lambert has said that he would be flattered if “Idol” wanted to talk to him about the stint, while Nick confirmed he’s “being considered to be a judge on American Idol,” adding that “it would be a dream come true if it happens.”
On the other hand, Pink recently revealed that she was offered to be a judge on “American Idol”, “The X Factor (US)” and Australian “The Voice“, but said no. “I said no because you can’t be honest. People will hate you if you’re honest,” she told Australia’s Herald Sun about her reason turning down the job.
She continued explaining, “Simon Cowell is the only person who gets away with it because he’s got an accent. And he’s a man. People would just hate me more than they already do. I don’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings. Besides, you can sing karaoke anywhere…” It’s unclear, however, for which season the pop/rock singer was approached for the gig.
The twelfth cycle of “American Idol” will premiere in early 2013 with Ryan Seacrest returning as the host. Mariah Carey has signed up to be a new judge, but Randy Jackson’s fate on the show is still up in the air.

Academy of Country Music New Artist trophy winner Scotty McCreery has chosen to turn his back on fame later this year to return to his studies at his father’s alma mater.
The 18-year-old American Idol winner will be a student at North Carolina State University in Raleigh after he completes a summer tour with Brad Paisley.
He tells CMT Radio, “I have decided to head down to Raleigh where my dad went to college at North Carolina State for at least for two years and maybe transfer to Nashville then. I’m excited.”
McCreery reveals he was accepted at all four schools he applied to, including Paisley’s alma mater, Belmont University, in Nashville, Tennessee.
Back in the early days of American Idol, contestants used to have to walk 10 miles in the snow to get to the live show, and standing ovations from the judges happened only a few times per season. On Season 11′s Top 9 Week, however, J.Lo, Randy, and Steven got to their feet for no fewer than five separate contestants — and a couple of them weren’t even the evening’s best performers.
On this week’s Idology, Season 6 star Melinda Doolittle and I discuss which contestants actually earned their standing Os, why Jimmy Iovine is making Jessica Vs. Hollie an either/or proposition, and what we’d like to see when it comes to Phillip and Colton’s pants. Plus, we engage in spirited debate over performances by Skylar Laine and DeAndre Brackensick, dish Joshua Ledet’s emotional break, and drop the phrase “the best move I’ve ever seen in my life” regarding a particularly ferocious vocalist.
“American Idol” finally gives away the first video of Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler as the show’s new judges. The two 45-seconds promos released by Ryan Seacrest compiled the footage of audition rounds where it is emphasized that “Everyone deserves a chance” and “Every voice deserves to be heard”.

Hearing a few worthy voices, Lopez and Tyler sometimes bob their heads along. Both of the promos only show the good auditions with different types of voice. Lopez says to one of the contestants, “I like it, I like you. I feel like your spirit comes out in your voice.” Tyler is heard saying to the same contestant, “Okay, I’ll say yes”.
The new season of “American Idol” starts January 19 on FOX on a new schedule, Wednesday for the performance and Thursday for the result. Producer Nigel Lythgoe previously said that they are taking the singing talent show more seriously and it’s shown in their selection of new judges. “They both listen intently and don’t make glib remarks. They give honest critiques,” he said of Lopez and Tyler.
