Episode Synopsis: On the return from an adventurous day at an amusement park, the Griffins’ car breaks down in Amish country and they are stranded with no way out. When Meg falls for an Amish boy, the Griffins then find themselves in a crusade against the conservative locals in the all-new episode “Amish Guy” of FAMILY GUY airing Sunday, Nov. 27 (9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

I’ve always wished that Family Guy knew how to better manage all of its characters within an episode. That formula is one of the most important factors when making or breaking a show, and it’s very rare to see an episode which involves the entire Griffin family. About 10 minutes into “Stewie Goes For A Drive”, I was pleased that we might have actually landed on a well-balanced half-hour of Family Guy until I realized that we wouldn’t be seeing Meg or Chris for the hour.

But we’ve been overdue for a Stewie-centric episode, so the other Griffin siblings are a feasible sacrifice for an episode that’s half-Stewie and half-Peter. On the Stewie side of things, his frustration for not being on Glee accidentally causes him to put Brian’s car in drive, giving him the driving bug which leads to obviously crashing the Prius. Brian gets pissed, and all of a sudden the show that just sent Stewie down the street in a car remembers that he’s just a baby—usually pretty funny when that happens—and his fear of being told on causes him to run away.

Somehow, Stewie ends up at Consuela’s house, and Brian coming to his rescue leads to a shootout. It’s far from Stewie’s best work on the show, but definitely had its moments of good physical shtick, between good use of Carrie Underwood and better use of baby violence. Also, Stewie bathing in some sort of quinceanera soup nearly had me in tears.

The show’s other story tonight involves Peter and jacked-as-sh*t (even in animation, it’s seriously impressive) Ryan Reynolds, whom he worries harbors a manlust for his chub. Explained, the truth is that Ryan isn’t “gay”, but he’s “attracted to Peter as a man would be attracted to a woman”. All pretty funny stuff, but Ryan Reynolds’ entire guest slot is based on the fact that you like Ryan Reynolds and his occasionally homoerotic humor, which I can definitely appreciate. Saw The Change-Up. Kinda loved it.

The cutaways weren’t the best, but Peter snapping his neck to avoid Lois’ book club was a winner—there was a robot movie reference in there that I just didn’t understand, and that it repeated itself to close the episode just lost me. But Herbert’s appearances (the Justin Bieber bit was pretty good) more than made up for that. Not the best Family Guy, but a definite improvement on the week before, using some of the elements it knows best.

If you’re keeping score out there, I haven’t been enjoying this year’s offerings of Family Guy nearly as much as I have the latest season of American Dad. As time goes on, it’s really a testament to how much more these characters still have in them; while Family Guy is getting pretty old pretty fast and its misfires tend to really misfire, even a mediocre episode of Dad shows that the show still has a few tricks left in its sleeve—and good ones, at that.

Like Family Guy’s Stewie and Brian, Steve and Roger on American Dad are the crazy bromantic duo (with one curiously sexual deviant) who are usually trustworthy for a good adventure now and again. Tonight, as Roger has serious lament for never fathering a child, he begs Stan and Francine to let him become Steve’s legal guardian, and the couple see this as a chance to finally get rid of those terrible goddamn kids and have a weekend to themselves.

While Stan and Francine are out at the waterpark, Steve’s cool relationship with Principal Lewis winds up getting the principal fired when Roger calls the superintendent and tattles on their new friendship. Pissed and smothered, Brian runs away with the principal (who at one point sells his ass on a street corner), but when Steve finally agrees to give Brian some space, Principal Lewis drives the pair of them off of a clip. Thank God things like this aren’t real life, because that would have been f*cking hilarious tragic.

Definitely not my favorite episode of the season, but it’s certainly enjoyable, and ties with this week’s Ryan Reynolds-themed Family Guy while easily trumping the sophomore episode of Allen Gregory, which I’ve seen and is not an awesome show. Seriously, it’s not.
