Lie to Me’s surprise midseason success last year has been attributed to its compelling leading man (Tim Roth) and its unconventional approach to the cop procedural.

So when Shawn Ryan (The Shield, The Unit) was brought in to co-executive-produce the show (with Samuel Baum, the show’s creator) this season, he wanted to maintain those two elements.

“There were a lot of things that worked well about the show last year, primarily Tim Roth,” Ryan says. “He’s one of the premier actors in the world. The show had a lot of strengths. I have just been trying to refine it, add a little adrenaline, add some deeper character work and dig really deep into who these characters really are.”

Ryan’s higher-octane imprint has already been felt. In the second-season premiere, master lie detector Cal Lightman (Roth) strangled a client (guest star Erika Christensen) to extract information from one of her alternate personalities. Ryan said he loved the way that scene turned out, but promised he wouldn’t take away the show’s lighter elements.

When the only amateur in a multi-million dollar Vegas poker showdown goes missing, the remaining players, many of them Lightman’s old cronies, are the obvious suspects. In order to unravel the mystery, Lightman must confront the best liars in the world while resisting the lure of the Vegas roulette tables…

[POPPY] 35 – 45 Caucasian; A beautiful, well-endowed, sexy, and very smart woman, who’s a well-known, highly proficient poker player scheduled to play in the high-stakes televised competition. An inspired schemer and a deft liar, she is part of a complicated plot to fix the contest — but whether or not she’s descended to murder remains to be seen…GUEST STAR (2)

[VAS BELANOV] 33-45; this charming cocky RUSSIAN man is another top-ranked poker player who is scheduled to compete in the live televised poker match. Obviously smitten with Foster (Kelli Williams), he tries his best to charm her. Vas and Poppy are not only having an affair, they are involved in a scheme to fix the poker match — but Vas may also have a more murderous motive that is about to come to light…GUEST STAR (2)

[MASON BROCK] Late 60’s -70’s Caucasian man. A rugged, extremely laid back guy, he’s the old dean of poker players, who has been raking in the money at the tables for decades now. [SHINGO HIROCHI] 20’s ASIAN man, who’s full of energy, bravado and cunning. Another masterly poker player competing in the televised match, Shingo the party boy, lives the high life, indulging freely in wine, women and games of chance. Also, briefly, a suspect in Jake’s disappearance, he’s an unethical trickster who may pay a price for his nasty tactics…GUEST STAR (2)

[MACEY HARTMAN] Early 20’s mid-western girl who’s Jake’s pretty, very pregnant young wife. She has been swept up into a whirl of publicity and easy money along with her poker-playing husband. When Jake disappears, Macey is beside herself with anxiety and hoping that Lightman can solve the mystery before it’s too late…GUEST STAR (4)

[JAKE HARTMAN] Early 20’s, he’s a wholesome, handsome young man from the Midwest, the only amateur who will be seated in the big poker game. Married, and expecting his first child, Jake witnesses a murder and suddenly disappears, just hours before the televised competition. It’s up to Lightman to figure out Jake’s whereabouts — or indeed, whether he’s still alive…GUEST STAR (1)
