‘Fashion Star’ Crowns Kara Laricks as First Winner

“Fashion Star” has wrapped up its inaugural season and named its first winner. After ten weeks of creating brand new collections and trying to sell them to buyers, Kara Laricks beat out two other finalists, Ronnie Escalante and Nzimiro Oputa, and nabbed the champion title.

In the finale that aired Tuesday, May 15, the three remaining contestants were tasked to design three collections for three different buyers, H&M, Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue. Each of Laricks’ collections was sold for $2 million.

“I feel so overwhelmed. I don’t know what to say. I’m so thrilled… at the opportunity to keep going and keep designing. This is so exciting, so thrilling!” so the 38-year-old New Yorker said upon learning her victory. Her collections will be featured in the buyers’ stores.

Escalante finished in the second place, while Oputa placed third. Mentor/judge Jessica Simpson said of the three finalists, “Each and every one of you, the people that you are and what you represent, you’ve inspired me to be better.”

Howard Stern’s ‘America’s Got Talent’ Debut Gets Positive Reviews

Howard Stern has proven that the Parents Television Council’s concern about his “America’s Got Talent” gig was too much. The radio personality made his promise by behaving himself during his first appearance on the show.

Giving critical yet compassionate comments to the contestants, Stern even got nice reviews about his judging stint. “I forgot how much I love Howard Stern,” one viewer tweeted, while another added, “Never was a fan of Howard Stern but gotta say I’m loving him on the show.”

Ken Tucker of Entertainment Weekly said “Stern was, for the most part, perfectly fine.” Meanwhile, Robert Lloyd of Los Angeles Times wrote that the shock-jock “has shown himself perfectly capable of good behavior on other people’s turf.”

Still being himself, Stern told a stripping magician on the show’s season premiere, “As a stripper you can’t have man-boobs.” He, however, managed to insert a joke when responding to a terrible singer’s revelation that his parents were dead. “They died of embarrassment?” he quipped.

Set in the Williamsburg neighborhood of the New York City borough of Brooklyn, the series chronicles the lives of two waitresses in their mid twenties—Max (Kat Dennings), who comes from a poor working-class family, and Caroline (Beth Behrs), who was born rich but is now disgraced and penniless due to her father, Martin Channing, getting caught operating a Bernard Madoff-esque Ponzi scheme—working together at a Brooklyn restaurant. The two become friends and build toward their dream of one day opening a cupcake shop. Among those working with them at the restaurant are their boss, Han Lee (Matthew Moy); Oleg (Jonathan Kite), an upbeat but perverted Ukrainian cook; and Earl (Garrett Morris), a 75-year-old African-American cashier. Also featured starting late in the first season is their neighbor and part time boss Sophie (Jennifer Coolidge), a Polish immigrant who runs the cleaning company Sophie’s Choice. During most of the first season Max is also a part-time nanny for the twin babies of Peach Landis, who during the season adopts Caroline’s horse Chestnut. At the start of each episode Max is shown serving a table and at the end of each episode, a tally shows how much they have made toward their goal of $250,000 needed to open their business.
