What Caused Cari Farver’s Death?

Cari Farver was described as an energetic and warm woman who brightened whatever room she entered. Her life, however, was not always so happy. She was diagnosed with depression in her late 20s, a few years after giving birth to her son, and her condition progressed to bipolar illness.

Thankfully, because of her meds, she was in a decent place by 2012. Cari, 37, had a steady career as a computer programmer and was even seeing a man named Dave Kroupa on the side. On November 13, however, she vanished from her Iowa home, never to be seen again. Her automobile was gone, but she had left some of her possessions behind.

Cari sent Dave a mysterious break-up message around the same time, and her mother received a text from her phone indicating that she had left her life behind to start a new adventure in Kansas. Many of Cari’s other friends and family members received identical letters, and they couldn’t verify they were illegitimate.

Cari’s mother only reported missing when she failed to see her at her half-brothers’ wedding on November 16. Even still, nothing happened, and Cari’s family, as well as Dave, continued to receive texts that were increasingly unpleasant, even stalker-like. Dave observed a familiar automobile in a neighbouring parking lot while driving home from work in January 2013, about two months after the harassment began. He got closer, and when he was certain it was Cari’s car, he photographed the licence plate and forwarded it to the cops.

When the cops searched the automobile, they only recovered one fingerprint, which was not Cari’s. The SMS messages persisted over time, but they became creepier as Dave’s on-again, off-again girlfriend, Shanna “Liz” Golyar, received them as well. However, in 2015, authorities began to assume that Cari was stabbed to death within 24 hours of her abduction, based on fresh evidence.

Who Killed Cari Farver and Why?

Shanna “Liz” Golyar, Dave’s on-again, off-again lover, was found guilty of Cari Farver’s disappearance and eventual murder. Cari’s case was picked up by a new team in 2015, and they asked Liz and Dave if they were comfortable with the contents of their phones being downloaded. The primary goal was to see whether they could pinpoint the location from which Cari was sending communications.

Despite the fact that nothing significant was found on Dave’s phone, detectives did locate a snapshot of Cari’s car on Liz’s phone, taken a month before the police were even aware of its existence. There was also proof that Liz had at least 20-30 fake e-mail Ids and a photo of a woman who was tied up that had been e-mailed to Dave using Cari’s ID. Liz was also using an app that allowed her to schedule text messages for later.

As a result, authorities began digging deeper into Liz’s background, estimating that she spent roughly 40-50 hours per week imitating Cari for nearly three years. So, in order to persuade her to confess to her crimes, they decided to go along with her acting ploy.

Officers learned of an e-mail claiming Cari had been stabbed to death in her own automobile within weeks. As a result, they examined her vehicle once more, this time removing the fabric from the seats, only to find blood on the passenger side cushion — blood that was later recognised as Cari’s. The fingerprint in the car also matched Liz’s, resulting in authorities a search warrant for her residence.

The officers recovered numerous of Cari’s belongings from Liz’s home. Later, Dave handed them her tablet, which included photographs of decomposing body parts on the SD Card, including one of a foot with a Chinese sign tattoo, the same one Cari had on hers. On December 22, 2016, Shanna “Liz” Golyar was charged with first-degree murder.

In August of 2017, she was found guilty of the same crime. Liz is suspected of murdering Cari, allowing her body to rot, and then burning the remains to destroy all evidence. They believe the incident was perpetrated in Omaha because she lived there at the time. Shanna “Liz” Golyar only did this because she wanted Dave Kroupa to herself.

On Oxygen, watch Dateline: Secrets Uncovered Season 10 Episode 54, which delves into this devastating love story that ends in a gruesome murder.
