Who was Gilbert Dossett and How Did He Die?

Gilbert Dossett was a proud father of two who lived alone in Evansville, Indiana. Gilbert was described as a kindhearted and helpful person who always greeted everyone with a smile and was willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He was also a pleasant person who avoided getting into any fights. Gilbert was still married to Brenda Dossett, despite their estrangement, and the former hoped for a better future. Gilbert’s outgoing demeanour made him a prominent figure in his neighbourhood.

Gilbert’s family members were unable to contact him for several days before his death on May 22, 2014. He was absolutely unreachable via texts or phone calls, causing concern and anxiety among his friends and family. As a last resort, the family contacted the police and requested that they conduct a welfare check. When the cops arrived at the victim’s Evansville home, they were met with the terrifying sight of Gilbert lying unconscious inside.

Who Killed Gilbert Dossett and Why?

Several family members, including Dossett’s ex-wife, Brenda Moore, were questioned by the police as part of their inquiry. She acknowledged going to Dossett’s house with Mason Hughes, her daughter Nikki’s boyfriend.

Brenda Dossett was soon suspected after the man’s family furnished detectives with proof. According to authorities, she concocted a scheme to murder her husband in exchange for a $42,000 life insurance policy on which she was the beneficiary. She allegedly enlisted the help of Hughes, her daughter’s lover.

Following conversations with the family, detectives from the Evansville Police Department shifted their attention to Brenda Dossett, according to a probable cause document. Dossett resided in Evansville with her son, daughter, and Hughes, who was dating Dossett’s daughter and had apparently moved from Anderson earlier this year. They had met on the internet.

Hughes confessed to authorities after being apprehended, allegedly admitting to shooting Dossett in the head while he slept. Hughes claims that he drove Dossett to her husband’s house, where they used her key to get entry. They had entered the residence with the same key the week before and taken a shotgun from Gilbert Dossett’s closet.

According to the complaint, after Hughes shot the sleeping man, Brenda Dossett and he moved items about to make it look like the house had been broken into. Hughes allegedly told police that in exchange for pressing the trigger, Dossett promised to purchase him a car.

Moore’s son Nicholas was also taken to the station, where Moore was overheard telling him that she was scared Mason might “break” and that they needed to “get rid of that pistol.” Authorities were able to charge Brenda and Mason with murder.
