Gulmohar Movie Review

At the film’s beginning, the Batras meet at the Gulmohar villa for one last celebration before moving elsewhere. They debate what it means to be a family and a home with only four days remaining before they must vacate their 34-year-old home. As they debate whether a family’s home or its members are what holds it together.

Manoj Bajpayee’s Arun Batra is the son of Sharmila Tagore’s Kusum Batra, and he believes that his mother will accompany him and his wife to their new Gurugram penthouse. But, the family matriarch has other plans, announcing that she will move to Pondicherry and settle there permanently.

The shocking revelation causes the family to meet for one more Holi celebration at their house before saying their final goodbyes. Despite appearances to the contrary, each connection contains many distinctions and fissures upon closer examination.

Arun and his son Aditya have a strained relationship, and Arun is unhappy with Aditya’s intention to move out on his own when the family moves. Arun spends the entirety of the film attempting to maintain peace and act as a responsible son, but his terrible past casts a shadow of melancholy over the entire production.

Gulmohar is one of the few films that had me thinking, “Oh, I like this” (or something similar) inside the first few minutes. The wonderful thing is that each character has their own plot, and we are able to observe their development and evolution throughout the work. Each character can be treated like the protagonist they are, rather than the story having to follow a single thread and be stuffed with subplots.

Diegetic or non-diegetic music enhances the story and the emotions of the characters. During emotionally charged moments, music can convey difficult-to-express emotions. By discussing the plot, it is evident that there is much to learn about the people, the nature of their interactions with one another, and their prior experiences.

As for the actors, Manoj Bajpayee deserves recognition for adding a degree of emotion to his performance that may make you cry. Tagore and Amol Palekar’s involvement signifies safety. Suraj Sharma also deserves credit; his portrayal of a person who wants to excel in bringing honour to their family is one that many individuals can relate to and enjoy.

Gulmohar Movie: Final Thoughts

Due to the rarity of moving narratives in contemporary media, you should take advantage of this movie. But, it could be more flawless; some portions may have been eliminated. I understand the intent to give characters depth, but including so many topical problems in one piece felt like they needed to be more balanced.

Being homosexual is not required for the younger daughter. And even if she wasn’t, if she had general interpersonal issues, the matriarch could still assist. The same can be said for the matriarch; her past is intriguing, and I can see why she wants to move to Pondicherry, but it’s only sometimes vital to the plot. The narrative focuses primarily on Arun and the complexities of his existence.

The genuine and positive depiction of the extended family was a pleasant change of pace from earlier works. Yet, the plot is beautiful and virtually flawless in every respect.

Gulmohar is currently available on Disney+ Hotstar.
