Is Delhi Crime Season 1 Based on a True Story?
The 2012 episode of gang rape in South Delhi’s Munirka neighbourhood inspired the film Delhi Crime. The series picks up after the gang rape, when Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Vartika Chaturvedi is tasked with identifying those responsible for the assaults and the victim’s ultimate demise.
The 2012 Delhi gang rape is the setting for the television series. He wrote a 400-page script and then spent five minutes describing the cast to Shefali, who agreed to play Vartika Chaturvedi, the main character.
The movie’s 62-day filming schedule began in Delhi in January 2018 and ended there. The series spans the time from the incident’s occurrence through the culprits’ ultimate arrest.

Because she was “not ashamed” and wished to de-stigmatize sexual assault victims and their families, her mother, Asha Devi, made her identity public.
How Was the Investigation Done?
Ram Singh, the bus driver, was found using CCTV footage from the highway less than 24 hours after the attack. He was discovered and taken into custody on the same bus where the assault occurred. Drawings created based on Awindra’s descriptions, and texts exchanged from the victims’ stolen phones helped police find the remaining suspects. Jyoti could only express herself verbally through hand signals and multiple-choice questions.
The final five suspects were swiftly located. The police detained Jyoti, her blood-stained clothing, Pawan Gupta, Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, and an unidentified 17-year-old while also recovering the iron rod. Jyoti’s bite marks on the bodies of the accused were visible evidence that she had resisted the guys. Her family established the Nirbhaya Jyoti Trust in her honour, which offers resources and a place to stay for victims of sexual assault.
What Happened to Jyoti’s (Nirbhaya) Convicts?
The driver passed away in custody in March 2013 (Singh was discovered hanging in Tihar Jail; some assume he killed himself, while others say inmates killed him), while the other criminals were still alive to answer for their actions.
The four additional adult defendants were found guilty of murder, rape, kidnapping, and evidence destruction. They received a hanging death penalty verdict.
The child defendant was found guilty of both murder and rape. The longest possible term for a youngster, three years in prison, was given to him. He was freed in 2015, and he apparently now goes under a different name.
All four death-row convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case were executed in March 2020. Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, and Pawan Gupta were put to death in Tihar Jail on March 20, 2020, at 5:30 a.m. IST. They were executed by hanging from a four-person gallows. According to prison officials, the four prisoners reportedly turned down offers of a final supper and fresh clothing before being put to death. They were carried to the gallows while wearing blindfolds and did not object. However, Vinay Sharma had a breakdown just before being hanged and started pleading with the guards. The four prisoners were left dangling for 30 minutes before being declared dead. According to reports, Mukesh Singh asked to give his organs.
Nirbhaya’s mother, Asha Devi, who had been fighting tenaciously for justice, stated this soon before the execution: “We all have waited so long for this day. Today’s dawn will be a new dawn as my daughter will get justice. It will also be a new dawn for daughters of India. My daughter’s soul will be at peace.”
Netflix ordered two seasons of Delhi Crime. Season two will focus on a whole different case as it continues to be an anthology series.
