The 48-year-old was a teacher at Metropolitan Community College in Omaha at the time, and she had recently completed her doctorate. Karen was close to her siblings, so when they didn’t hear from her for a few days, they were concerned.
Cynthia, Karen’s sister, attempted calling but was unable to reach her. The 48-year-old was reported missing on October 17, 2010. Six days later, a body was discovered under an abandoned house, bringing the hunt to a tragic end.
It was directly across the street from her own building. Karen was discovered face down on the ground, as though she had been dumped there. Karen had been suffocated with a ligature, according to an autopsy. Her nose and mouth had also been packed with tissue and glue-sealed shut.
Who Murdered Karen Jenkins and Why?
Karen’s tenants and others in the neighbourhood were questioned as part of the investigation. After looking through her phone records, she discovered that one of the last individuals she spoke with was a man named Gary Lee. According to the show, he first informed the police that he didn’t know Karen and had never met her throughout the missing person investigation. Gary was brought up for questioning after phone records revealed otherwise.
Gary ultimately admitted to what had transpired after being questioned. He claimed to be Monique Lee’s brother to the police. She was a single mother of two who lived in one of Karen’s apartments. Karen had presented Monique with an eviction notice two days before she vanished, according to the investigators. Gary had contacted Karen and enticed her to one of her vacant flats under the guise of being interested in renting it.
Monique then used a vacuum cleaner cord to strangle Karen while Gary pulled her legs down. They then sealed her lips and nostrils with glue and tissue to prevent her from breathing. The siblings carried the body around for the following few days before finally dumping it outside the abandoned house. Gary, who was only 19 years old at the time, and Monique were arrested in December 2010.
What Has Happened to Monique Lee and Gary Lee?
Monique’s first trial ended in a hung jury. She then pled not guilty due to insanity in 2012. Monique was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia as a child, it was found. Her family said that she attempted to poison her mother once and had raped her brother as a toddler. Monique Lee said that she killed Karen because a man named “Black” threatened to take her children away.
The prosecution, on the other hand, believed Monique killed her landlord as a result of the eviction notice. She was found guilty of first-degree murder in Karen Jenkins Murder case and a weapons offence in August 2012. Monique was later imprisoned for the rest of her life. However, she died on January 18, 2013, just months after her sentence began, at the Nebraska women’s jail in York, York County.
The 29-year-old had been in the medical unit for a few days due to an unidentified ailment, but the reason of her death was not made public. Gary pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in October 2011 in Karen Jenkins Murder case and agreed to testify against his sister. In an unexpected change of events, he claimed on the stand that Monique had no involvement in the murder and that he was the one who killed Karen.
Gary was charged with perjury in the end. He was sentenced to 65 to 100 years in jail in November 2012. Gary is still detained at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution in Johnston County, Nebraska, according to records. In 2043, he will be eligible for parole.
