How Did Mani Aldridge and Robin Die?

The education industry had employed Robin Christine Aldridge, 58, for more than twenty years. She was a teacher at an elementary school in Albemarle County, Virginia, at the time of the incident. Mani and Robin resided in Charlottesville after Robin adopted him from Ukraine in 2000, sometime after their divorce. The 17-year-old had a talent for playing musical instruments and attended a nearby high school. They were said to be quite close.

On December 5, 2014, at about 11:47 p.m., nearby people became aware of a fire at the Aldridges’ home. Before they could eventually enter, first responders had been working on it for more than an hour. They observed blood traces inside before discovering two bodies in the basement. Both Mani and Robin suffered severe injuries from blunt and sharp objects. Before the house caught fire, they were slaughtered while still wrapped in blankets.

Who Killed Robin and Mani Aldridge

Who Killed Mani & Robin Aldridge and Why?

Robin’s car and both of his phones were also missing, along with the television, when the police arrived. According to the drama, following Robin’s phone led them to a few miles away, an apartment building. Her car was left in the parking area while the phone was discovered in a dumpster. The police also discovered other evidence in the bin, including a pair of running shoes. Additionally, a man was seen walking toward the bin while carrying the same shoes in security footage taken the night of the murder.

One individual stood out when speaking with the apartment complex’s residents: Gene Everett Washington, who was 30 at the time. He had a history of assault, grand theft, and narcotics offenses and resided there with his wife and child. Gene was on probation at the time. On closer inspection, Gene was familiar with Mani. They met online, according to the show, and communicated via messaging. Katie, Gene’s wife, thought Mani and Gene had a sexual relationship.

Although Gene initially insisted he had nothing to do with the killings, the authorities subsequently detained him for violating his probation. However, Gene was carrying Mani’s phone at the time, and a search of his house turned up the Aldridges’ missing television. The show claims that when he was in jail, he confessed to his wife that he had sex with Mani.

Then Gene gave various accounts of his interactions with Robin and Mani in numerous letters to the City Council, the Attorney General’s Office, and other organizations. In one letter, he claimed to have had sex with both the mother and the daughter. Along with the two, Gene mentioned being involved in a love triangle. He also said that on the day of the incident, Robin discovered him having sex with Mani and became enraged, beating the two.

When Gean tried to get dressed, Robin said she had called the police. But instead, he “began to swing” because of his fear, killing them both.

However, the prosecution’s account of the events was different:

  1. They believed that Mani’s presence during Gene’s home burglary caused him to kill her.
  2. They asserted that he allegedly waited for Robin to get home before attacking her as well.
  3. The prosecution cited Gene’s lack of defensive wounds and other contradictions in his story.

What Happened to Gene Washington and Where Is He Now?

In court, Gene’s defense team discussed his terrible upbringing, including how his mother treated him and the 2006 death of his brother. Gene was regarded as cognitively challenged and had also struggled with depression, PTSD, and anxiety. A defense expert testified that Gene may have been killed in response to dire circumstances. In the end, Gene filed Alford pleas for the second-degree murder of Mani and the capital murder of Robin in June 2017. In September 2017, after the death penalty was ruled out, he was given a life sentence plus an additional 40 years. According to the records, Gene is still a prisoner at Sussex I State Prison in Waverly, Virginia.
