Thomas “Tom” Allers: Who Is He?

Thomas Allers is a former Baltimore police sergeant who led the department’s Gun Trace Task Force (GTTF) and used his position to commit a number of robberies. Prosecutors claimed that Allers’ actions emboldened his employees to engage in a variety of unlawful behaviours during his following trial.

The former sergeant confessed to stealing money from victims, swearing fake affidavits, and filing fraudulent incident reports in his plea agreement. Allers joined the Baltimore Police Department on July 22, 1996, and worked in law enforcement for a number of years until becoming the commander of the Gun Trace Task Force in 2013.

He was sent to a Drug Enforcement Administration task team in 2016. Around this time, the GTTF was being investigated for unlawful activity by its members. As a result, Allers was not among the first seven GTTF police officers accused in early 2017.

However, two former members of the task force, former detectives Jemell Rayam and Momodu Gondo, who were arrested and then became state cooperators, claimed to have stolen money with Allers. In the end, the former sergeant claimed to have taken part in 9 thefts from 2014 to 2016.

He was the first of eight officers to be found guilty in the case. During his time in court, Allers made a brief statement. “I will live with this until the day I die,” he stated, apologising for his actions.

At the hearing, Allers was surrounded by friends, and the court received dozens of letters from those who claimed Allers was a good family, friend, and coworker. The former GTTF head admits to taking almost $117,000 in total.

“It strikes at the foundation of our entire criminal justice system when judges and jurors cannot rely on the testimony of sworn law enforcement officials because they are covering up their own crimes,” stated U.S. District Court Judge Catherine C. Blake.

Thomas Allers was sentenced to 15 years in jail.

What Happened to Thomas Allers and Where Is He Now?

Thomas Allers is now serving a 15-year sentence that was handed down by a federal judge in 2018. He is currently incarcerated at FCI Coleman Low, a low-security federal correctional centre in Sumterville, Florida, according to prison records.

Allers petitioned then-President Donald Trump to shorten his imprisonment in 2021. His release date is currently set for 2030. The former Baltimore police sergeant will be on supervised release for 3 years after his release. Thomas Allers appears to have a wife named Angel Allers and a son from a prior relationship with Thomas Allers.

Angel Allers testified at the time of Thomas Allers’ sentence that her husband claimed his integrity but pleaded guilty because he feared he wouldn’t get a fair trial.
