The series ‘The Thing About Pam‘ is a crime thriller that centres on the dramatic murder case of Betsy Faria. The show is based on the same-named Dateline NBC true-crime podcast. It follows Pamela “Pam” Hupp as she investigates her role in the death of Betsy Faria, her best friend.
The aforementioned podcast and episodes of ‘Dateline NBC’ have thoroughly investigated the real-life case. As a result, it’s no surprise that producer Cathy Singer appears in episode 3 of the show.

Who is Cathy Singer, and Where Did She Come From?
Cathy Singer is a television producer and journalist who is most known for her work on NBC’s ‘Dateline NBC,’ a news magazine/reality series. The Betsy Faria murder case, Russ Faria’s subsequent prosecution, retrial, and acquittal, and Pam Hubb’s alleged role in the murder and deceiving the investigation are all covered in the series.
When the news of the murder first broke, Singer, a producer for NBC’s “Dateline,” covered all of the important events of the case.
She began her media career in 1977 as a reporter for a small weekly newspaper in Illinois. During the 1980s, she worked for several news organisations in Los Angeles and at CBS News in New York.
In 1994, Singer joined NBC’s ‘Dateline NBC’ as a producer and was a key participant in the prolonged coverage of the Betsy Faria murder case. Russ Faria’s relatives initially told her about the matter in 2013.
Pam Hupp was convicted for the murder of Louis Gumpenberger on August 16, 2016, and authorities believe she was able to entice him to her residence by pretending to be Cathy, the ‘Dateline’ producer. According to her version, she returned home from a thrift store to discover a man named Louis waiting outside her door.
She went on to say that he lunged at her with a knife and that she murdered him in self-defense. However, because Louis was crippled (as a result of a previous injury), he could not have carried out the attack that Pam said occurred.
Pam had been in Louis’ area around 45 minutes before he died, according to investigators. Despite Pam’s assertion that she was seeing her daughter, who lived nearby, a man and a woman said they were contacted by a woman who worked for the NBC show. In exchange for a thousand dollars, this woman requested a soundbite for an episode about 911 calls.
The woman initially agreed to participate in the exchange, which took place on August 10, 2016. When this alleged producer was unable to present credentials, the woman withdrew. Pam was later identified as the ‘Dateline’ producer by the latter.
What Has Happened to Cathy Singer?
Pam was alleged to have used the same deception to entice Louis. She was driving throughout the region, introducing herself as “Cathy from Dateline,” and this was allegedly done to divert attention away from the investigation into Betsy’s death.
Pam may have felt comfortable imitating Cathy because “I guess since I had been in St. Louis several times covering this topic and we had aired our third TV episode on it by then,” according to the real Cathy. And because I’m a woman, I was probably an easy yet successful target for her plot.”
Needless to say, the real Cathy was taken aback when she discovered the reality. ‘The Thing About Pam,’ a true-crime documentary podcast series, was also created by Singer. Singer appears in the third episode of the television series ‘The Thing About Pam,’ as a fictionalised version of himself. Singer travels to Troy, Missouri, to meet with defence attorney Joel Schwartz and learn more about the murder of Betsy Faria.
