Who is Greg Owens and What He Did?
Greg Owens is a skilled marksman who served in the Army and retired as a sergeant major. Before settling in Londonderry, New Hampshire, with his wife of 36 years, Rachel, he lived in several locations all over the world. Wayne Owens, Rachel and Greg’s son, was born to them. Before the incident, Greg was Rachel’s caregiver when she was identified as having dementia.
Carol Chabot, a close family friend, picked up Rachel on December 15, 2014, so she could spend a brief time at her house. Greg would benefit from Rachel’s desire to take some time off.
However, a few days later, a trespasser broke into the Saco, Maine, home of the Chabots. Carol and her husband Steve were in the bedroom on the second floor when they heard the disturbance. When Steve entered the corridor, he noticed a man carrying a gun who was covered in dark clothing and a ski mask. The attacker sought to enter Carol’s bedroom, where she was, by this time, hiding.
After failing, he entered the room where Rachel was sleeping. After being shot three times, the assailant fled to the master bedroom. Steve shut the door, but the assailant fired through it, striking him three times.
When Steve called the police, they came right away and took the hurt people to the hospital. At the residence, it was discovered that the trespasser had broken a glass window to open the garage door. The police gathered several unique 9mm shells from 1987. In addition, a boot print from the exterior was saved for comparison and further study. At a fueling stop, the police approached Greg, who had been in Londonderry. He admitted to working most of the night when he was later hauled in for questioning.

Greg claims that he only left the house twice—once to grab a coffee and once to go to the petrol station. When it happened, the cops discovered blood on him as well as the driver’s side of his car. Greg initially said he cut himself on a coffee mug when questioned about it, but he then altered it to a drinking glass.
The investigators later discovered that Greg had been having an extramarital relationship in Oklahoma with Betsy Wandtke for the previous six years. He had informed her that he was getting ready to divorce Rachel on one of his frequent visits there. She threatened to break up with him, but she recognized he might never do it.
Only two weeks had passed since the confrontation before the shooting. Greg was now the main suspect in what happened. Then, Greg has identified at the crime site thanks to DNA evidence from the garage door. In addition, the police discovered shoes in his car that appeared to match the boot print from the crime scene and the same type of gunshots at the Londonderry residence. The garments in the dryer and washing machine at the residence matched the attacker’s clothing description. Additionally, Steve remembered Greg wearing the same style of spectacles during a previous vacation that the shooter did.
What Happened to Greg Owens and Where Is He Now?
According to Greg’s defense, it would have been challenging for Greg to make the drive and return home. They cited his business emails from that time period and the fact that his car was invisible in the highway’s CCTV footage. The computer’s clock had been tampered with, allowing Greg’s data to be viewed at 5:16 am rather than 2:16 am, as the police discovered. According to accounts, he allegedly urged his supervisor to make up a video call they made just before the event.
Greg was put on trial in federal court in February 2016 after being charged with committing the offense while straddling two states. He was found guilty of interstate domestic violence and using a firearm both during and in connection with a violent crime by a jury after three hours of deliberation. Greg received a life sentence plus an additional 20 years in jail. According to federal prison records, Greg, who is now 65 years old, is still a prisoner at the United States Penitentiary, Canaan, in Waymart, Pennsylvania.
