Where is Sarma Melngailis’ Father ‘John Melngailis’ Now?

John Melngailis

Sarma Melngailis was once regarded as the queen of vegan food, but her life spiralled out of control after she married a man who promised to make her dreams come true. After all, rather than finding stability, she was soon accused of stealing thousands of dollars from her employees and investors, only to be caught by a pizza order he’d placed for himself.

The strangest thing, according to her father, John Melngailis in Netflix documentary ‘Bad Vegan,’ is that she didn’t even inform her family about their relationship at first, but let’s focus on the latter for now.

Who is John Melngailis, and Where Did He Come from?

After fleeing his hometown of Latvia with his family as a child in October 1944 to avoid Russian occupation, John Melngailis landed in the United States of America in late 1949 after a few hiccups.

Thankfully, he was able to discover not only a sense of calm, comfort, and belonging while growing up in Western Pennsylvania, but also his genuine mission in life.

That’s why, before becoming a professor at MIT and then the University of Maryland, he got a Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. in Physics from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Academics, particularly in the discipline of Electrical and Computer Engineering, seemed to be John’s passion at the time, so he concentrated on them while still trying to care for his family.

Even though he divorced his then-wife in the early 1980s, it seemed as if he didn’t let anything diminish the amount of love he gave their two daughters, Ilza and Sarma. The fact that the latter is almost identical to him in terms of essence, that he threatened to call the cops when Anthony Strangis allegedly refused to let her talk to him.

While on the run (as per the show), and that he has never hesitated to assist his girls whenever they are in need are all proof of his love for them.

What happened to John Melngailis And Where Is He Now?

Although John Melngailis is no longer engaged in academia and appears to have relocated to New York in his early 80s, he is nonetheless well-respected in the community. In addition, he maintains a close relationship with his daughters and is now happily married to freelance food and family journalist Michaele Weissman, with whom he has a son.

Although John had met her at a party in Cambridge in the 1960s, their relationship did not continue long at the time. When they reconnected after his divorce, though, they resolved to never let each other go again, and they haven’t.

In terms of his work, the former professor is now the co-founder and partner of Black Rooster Food, a company that allows him to sell delectable and nutritious old-world sourdough rye bread.

These loaves, which are hand baked in Brooklyn, New York, using traditional Latvian recipes and no wheat flour, enable him to respect his history in one of the most incredible ways possible.

That’s especially true because he was inspired to start this company after his mother, a successful entrepreneur in Latvia, passed away. She baked almost to the end of her life at the age of 91.

But, more importantly, John feels that rye bread eating, when done correctly, can help with a variety of health problems, including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
