Tayla Harris began playing competitive football at the age of five while growing up in the Brisbane suburbs, unaware that her passion and dedication would eventually lead her to much more. She has done it all, from representing local teams as a teenager to joining the AFL Women’s team ahead of its first season to being named to the All-Australian squad three times (2017, 2018, and 2020).
She rose to prominence in women’s athletics in 2019 after taking a stand against internet trolls who used a photo of her on the field to make sexual and derogatory comments.
Tayla was filmed in full flight during a game doing a drop punt, and however, instead of focusing on her dedication, some chose to go down the disgusting route. She responded by tweeting a photo of herself at work with the description, “Here’s a pic of me at work… think about this before making insulting comments, animals,” which triggered an outpouring of support. The fact that 7AFL took down their original post sharing the photograph after the inappropriate remarks also played a part, especially since the move was seen as caving into the trolls.
However, the network attempted to make amends by republishing the action shot later that day and apologising, saying, “We’re sorry.” The message sent by removing the photo was incorrect. Many of the comments on the post were deplorable, and we’ll do everything we can to keep trolls off our pages. We wanted to show off [Tayla’s] tremendous athleticism, and we’ll keep celebrating women’s football.”
Then, in September 2019, a bronze statue of the athlete and her image was unveiled in Melbourne’s Federation Square as a reminder to the world that women in sports matter.
Nonetheless, as recounted in the documentary, Tayla has been harassed online, with some comments threatening to “pull down the statue” or “burn her on a stake.” “I don’t know what I expected with life becoming so public,” she remarked, “but I figured that people will be nice back to you if you just try to be nice.” That isn’t always how the world works.” “I’m human, too,” the 25-year-old added. So, of course, it bothers me now and then… I’m aware of what they say. Every day, they tell me something new. [That] I’m overrated, overpaid, and nothing more than a girl with a lucky photo.”
Tayla hasn’t let any of this stop her; she’s still an AFLW footballer and a successful professional boxer, and she’s recently become a certified wedding celebrant. The dual athlete is presently a member of the Melbourne Football Club, often known as the Demons, which she joined after a tumultuous leave from Carlton in 2021, which included rumours of inconsistency and a salary dispute.
Tayla has since conceded that she did not handle the situation as effectively as she could have, but she insists that “there has never been a game of footy that I haven’t given my best at that particular moment.”
“In terms of my mental capacity to contribute to soccer right now, this [2022] season is entirely at the opposite end of the spectrum compared to previous,” Tayla admitted. “When I had to think about my family and all that stuff in the middle of Covid [last year], I didn’t have the ability to participate.” Now that I’ve established my priorities, I’m completely focused.”
In terms of her new career, it appears that the ordained celebrant specializes in individualized wedding ceremonies that are exciting, creative, and inclusive while also assisting with the legal procedure.
Tayla is currently involved in a loving and healthy relationship with fellow AFLW athlete Kodi Jacque (Richmond Football Club).
